The Mercedes-Benz W111 was a chassis code given to a range of Mercedes-Benz vehicles produced between 1959 and 1971, including four-door saloons (1959-1968) and two-door coupés and cabriolets (1961 to 1971). Their bodywork featured distinctive tailfins that gave the models their Heckflosse nickname — German for "fintail

(1959-1971) Mercedes-Benz W110/111/112 Heckflosse bodywork -designed by Paul Bracq. Heckflosse’ means ‘tailfin’ in German, and it appeared on a lot of Mercedes-Benz cars. This model was the benchmark for engineering excellence, a paragon of safety and the successful mainstay into the 1960s for that most sober and accomplished of car companies, and yet it pandered to fashion so ill-advisedly.

The "Fintail" models 220, 220S and 220SE, 230S (W111), were named after the discreet tail fins that adorn the rear fenders. This new Mercedes-Benz luxury class generation was a very special milestone in automotive history as it represented the first time that the safety body with a rigid passenger cell and crumple zones at the front and rear had been implemented in a production car, thereby better protecting the occupants.
